More Hardware for the Minor Atoms

On February 25-28, the Minor Atoms took a road trip to Lake Placid to play in the American Cup. Even though the Knights played up an age group and up a level, they fared extremely well against the tough American competition and came home with the B Championship title. The Knights had a very tough round robin draw, which included the eventual A Champ and A runner-up. In the first game the Knights outshot the Canton Bears Gold 16-13 but fell 3-1 in a game where both sides had their chances. In the next game, the Knights tied the Lawrence Flames 4-4 in an exciting see-saw battle filled with lead changes and ties. In the final round robin game, the Knights took down the Binghamton Senators 4-0. In the B Championship game the Knights handily beat the Plymouth Shamrocks 4-1 to take the gold medal (as a precursor to Team Canada's gold medal later that day).

Major Bantam Knights win in Rochester

On February 15th the Major Bantam Knights won the Rochester Power-Play Bantam A tournament. The Knights started the tournament with a lopsided 12-3 win over Perinton, New York. They followed that with a shutout victory over a team from Cleveland 4-0. The boys then battled the refs in their only loss, to a team from Central Pennsylvania, spending half the game in the box. But, it was a meaningless game as they were already in the semi-finals.

Bob Scaini Receives Celebration 2010 Community Sports Volunteer Award

On Saturday, January 30th, Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi presented Bob Scaini with the Celebration 2010 Community Sports Volunteer Award in recognition of his over 30 years of volunteer service to hockey in Ottawa West. CELEBRATION 2010 is an award program initiated by the Hon. Jim Watson to recognize and honour the unsung heroes of community sport and recreation in Ottawa. In a statement announcing the Celebration 2010 program, Mr. Watson stated, "As Canada prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympics, your Ottawa area MPPs would like to honour local sports heroes who have made a big difference in the lives of athletes and the community in Ottawa. Perhaps it’s the long serving coach of a little-league team; or the person who floods the rink every night. This is a recognition program for sports and recreation volunteers, not athletes."

Minor Atom Cardiac Kids Strike Gold at the Capital Winter Classic

On January 22-24, the Minor Atoms played in the 6th Annual Capital Winter Classic Tournament at the Sensplex. It was another strong showing from the Cardiac Kids who finished the tournament a perfect 5-0 with 24 goals for and only 3 against. It was a great outcome for the team, which was hampered by at least one nasty flu bug. In the round-robin, the Golden Knights posted a 3-1 win over the Osgoode-Richmond Romans, an 8-1 win over the Markham Waxers and a 6-0 win over the Metcalfe-Russell River Rats. For each of these Golden Knight opponents, these losses were their only losses in the round-robin. As a result, those three teams plus the Golden Knights all advanced to the play-off round.
