The Minor Atom Golden Knights won the Bell Capital Cup on January 2 with a dramatic 2-1 double OT win over the East Gwillimbury Eagles.  The game was marked by excellent play from both teams including stellar defensive plays and superb goaltending.  The Knights carried a 1-0 lead into the third but East Gwillimbury tied it up with 2:08 remaining in regulation time.  Both teams had their chances in the overtime periods but it was the Knights who took the cup with a goal well into the second extra frame.

Things did not look as good for the Knights earlier in the tournament.  Despite outshooting opponents an average of 22 to 9 in the round robin, the Knights finished the round robin in a three-way tie for first in group C with a win over Stittsville Rams White and 1-1 ties with both the Bradford Bulldogs and the Caledon Hawks.  Thanks to strong team defence and excellent goaltending that allowed only two goals in the three games, the Knights made it into the play-off round on their goal differential.

In the play-offs, the Knights stepped up their game and coasted to a 6-1 win over the Newmarket Redmen in the quarter-finals.  In the semi-finals, the Barrie Colts almost stole one from the Knights but the team dubbed the Cardiac Kids again showed their resiliency with two power-play goals 14 seconds apart late in the third period to seal the 2-1 win.  Later that evening, they beat previously undefeated East Gwillimbury for the title before hundreds of cheering supporters at Scotiabank Place.

It was a memorable tournament for the players, coaches and their families and friends.  Congratulations to all!
