On Saturday, January 30th, Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi presented Bob Scaini with the Celebration 2010 Community Sports Volunteer Award in recognition of his over 30 years of volunteer service to hockey in Ottawa West.  CELEBRATION 2010 is an award program initiated by the Hon. Jim Watson to recognize and honour the unsung heroes of community sport and recreation in Ottawa.

In a statement announcing the Celebration 2010 program, Mr. Watson stated, "As Canada prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympics, your Ottawa area MPPs would like to honour local sports heroes who have made a big difference in the lives of athletes and the community in Ottawa. Perhaps it’s the long serving coach of a little-league team; or the person who floods the rink every night. This is a recognition program for sports and recreation volunteers, not athletes."

Bob has been a fixture in the Ottawa West Hockey community for many years. As per the following "nomination" letter submitted by OWHA President Norm Sharpe, Bob has been a positive influence in the lives of many hockey players in Ottawa West.

"I would like to nominate Bob Scaini for the Celebration 2010 Community Sports Volunteer award. Bob has been the Treasurer of the Ottawa West Minor Hockey Association for as long as I can remember and has been a volunteer with this organization for over 30 years. In addition to his duties as Treasurer, at the start of every season Bob helps organize our conditioning and tryout camps, and coordinates our annual Ice Raffle draw. Each year around new years, he spends countless hours assisting our Major Atom team host the Bell Capital Cup Tournament at Barbara Ann Scott Arena. Throughout the year Bob coordinates the Canteen we run at Barbara Ann Scott Arena taking care of ordering and stocking, paying suppliers and depositing the sales receipts. All of these events are major fundraisers for our organization and are the main reason we are able to offer our minor hockey players one of the lowest rates for registration in the Ottawa Area."

" In addition to helping the minor hockey association, Bob is on the Board for the Ottawa West Golden Knights Junior B club. You can find him volunteering at all home games to ensure the Junior B club runs smoothly as well. While he hasn’t been able to help them on the ice, his administrative work in the background has allowed the club’s coaches and managers to focus on hockey operations, resulting in numerous championships during his tenure there."

In his many years of as a hockey volunteer, Bob has seen numerous products of the Ottawa West hockey program go on to success at higher levels. This includes players like Luke Richardson, Brendan Bell, Doug Wilson, Dan Boyle, Paul Byron and Eric Odell to name a few.

"At the Ottawa West Minor Hockey Association, we take pride in our ability to create and foster “community” hockey for our players and their families. Bob epitomizes the community spirit that we have in Ottawa West. Bob has been retired from the workforce for many years and with each passing year, says that soon he will retire from the Board of Ottawa West minor hockey as well. I for one will regret that day as this will be a great loss to Ottawa West and our minor hockey program. "

"While I am sure that you will have many deserving applications, I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the Celebration 2010 Community Sports Volunteer award than Bob Scaini."

Norm Sharpe

President

Ottawa West Minor Hockey Association

When Blake Sinclair, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations for the Ottawa West Golden Knights Junior B team heard about the award, he stated,  "They couldn't have picked a better guy than Bob."

The Executive of the Ottawa West Minor Hockey Association wish to congratulate Bob for receiving this award and would like to thank him for his long standing contribution to community hockey in Ottawa West.
